Purdue University, Brigham Young University, and RM Launch Research Project to Improve Student Learning Outcomes Through “Assessment-Based Learning”


LONDON, October 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — RM, a leading provider of technology solutions for the education sector, today announced the third phase of a research project with Purdue University and Brigham Young University to better understand and explore the impact of assessment-based learning on student achievement.

This research, conducted by Purdue University Polytechnic Institute and Brigham Young University School of Technology, will be the largest study ever using adaptive comparative judgment – ​​which harnesses our natural ability to make more consistent and accurate judgments by comparing pairs of items rather than in isolation. The research is funded by a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation, Virginia.

This third phase sees students from more than 20 schools per year in DeKalb County, Georgia implement RM Compare – RM’s industry-leading adaptive comparative assessment and judgment tool – for three years from the start of the upcoming academic year as part of their continuous learning.

While traditional efforts to improve student learning and assessment often focus on teachers as assessors rather than the students themselves, the project’s goal is to empower students by allowing them to better understand what a good job looks like. , stimulating and promoting learning.

The first two phases of the research were undertaken in 2019 and 2020 and saw half of the cohort of approximately 550 undergraduates given the opportunity to view and assess finalized work submitted by a previous cohort via RM Compare before being charged with an unrelated mission. The other half of the cohort continued traditional classroom activities such as sharing work and feedback in a teacher-led discussion.

The result was that students who used RM Compare developed a better understanding of “what good looks like” and significantly improved their results, with this improvement in results seen across all of the students’ abilities – which is particularly interesting given that few interventions achieve equity of outcome and impact when dealing with more difficult and hard-to-reach students.
