George was christened George Cannon. He assumed the middle name of Quayle while in the gold fields of California because there was another George Cannon who was an unsavory character.

George was counselor to Brigham Young in the First Presidency of the LDS Church and counselor to succeeding Church presidents (John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow).
